ABC announced on Tuesday April 2nd that Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for Season 21.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 will premiere on Semptember 26th
Created by the estimable Shonda Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy was an out-of-the-gate hit when it debuted in 2005. In the decades that have followed, it has weathered countless staff changes, both on screen and behind the scenes. Season 19 saw leading lady Ellen Pompeo (aka Meredith Grey) make her exit as a regular, leaving Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) as the only remaining OGs. Season 19 also marked the departure of showrunner Krista Vernoff, who handed the reins to executive producer Meg Marinis for Season 20.
Grey’s is the longest-running primetime medical drama in TV history, a milestone it reached in 2019. It also is the longest running primetime series in the network’s history.
Jason George Returning To ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ As Series Regular
It’s official: Jason George is rejoining Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular. The Station 19 star has closed a deal to join the main cast of the venerable ABC medical drama for the upcoming 21st season.
Formerly Lauren Graham’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist love interest (and employee!), Michael Thomas Grant has been tapped by Grey’s Anatomy to recur in Season 21 as James, the hospital’s new chaplain, TVLine has exclusively learned.
Per ABC, the character “joins Grey Sloan as [its] openly gay Episcopal chaplain. He holds a special place in his heart for his younger patients, and his warmth, training and spirituality make him comfortable and confident in any situation. In his personal life, James finds himself at a crossroads where he is open to love and taking great leaps of faith.”
Grey’s Anatomy has sealed a deal with Scott Speedman not only to continue to recur in Season 21 but to appear in more episodes than the season prior.
Whereas in the writers’- and actors’-strikes-shortened Season 20, the actor played Nick Marsh in four episodes, he’s set to do five this go-round.
A Million Little Things Alum Floriana Lima joins the cast
The past is going to come crashing into the present for Grey’s Anatomy doc Owen in Season 21. A Million Little Things vet Floriana Lima has been cast as Nora, a childhood friend of Hunt and sister Megan’s, TVLine has confirmed.
Lima’s character is described as a devoted mom and recent divorcée who is determined to survive not only for her kids’ sake but also so that she can see what her own next chapter holds. That will prove to be no mean feat when her arc begins on the long-running drama in the Thursday, Oct. 3, episode: Dangerous complications have arisen from a routine surgery performed at a hospital other than Grey Sloan.
Will Carina De Luca, Monica Beltran and Taryn Helm be recurring guest stars?
With regard to Stefania Spampinato’s Grey’s/Station 19 character, EP Meg Marinis says that “Carina exists in our world, so [an appearance is] always a possibility,” while Jaicy Elliot’s “Taryn will eventually come back from Paris. We love her, and we love Taryn and Levi’s friendship.” The showrunner is cagier, though, about a return for Natalie Morales’ Monica, who was set up to be paired with Amelia only to unexpectedly get with Winston instead. “We love having Natalie in the fold,” Marinis says. “Monica brings something different out in each of our characters. So if and when she returns, [her flirtation with Amelia and hookup with Winston] will definitely need to be addressed.” TVLine can confirm Variety’s report that Morales will return for at least six episodes, stating with 12×02.
Should we expect a three-month time jump at the beginning of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21? That’s what happened at the end of Station 19 when Ben announced that he was going back to his surgical residency….
“No,” says Grey’s boss Meg Marinis. “I wouldn’t call it a time jump. I wouldn’t say it’s a direct pickup [of Season 20’s finale], either, but our timeline is more in keeping with where we left off at the end of last season.”
More to Come..
