Isobel Stevens, Izzie, is a fictional character from the medical drama television series Grey’s Anatomy.

The character was created by series creator and producer Shonda Rhimes, and has been portrayed by actress Katherine Heigle.

Izzie grew up in Forest Park, on Route 6, behind a church in Chehalis, Washington. She lived in a trailer park with her mother who nicknamed her “Cricket.”

As a teenager, Izzie worked as a waitress and had savings for college, but her mother spent most of the saved money on psychics. This forced Izzie to pay most of the bills with her own money.

At age 15, Izzie became pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl and gave her up for adoption at 16 in order to give her a better life. She secretly named the girl Sarah, but her adoptive parents named her Hannah.

Izzie Stevens is an attending surgical oncologist. She was a surgical resident at Seattle Grace Hospital until she was fired shortly after the merger with Mercy West Medical Center.

Engaged to Denny Duquette until his death, she is now in a relationship with her ex-husband, Alex Karev. Together, they have twins, Alexis and Eli.
